Photo Of The Day: Walking The Oberbaumbrücke

Walking the Oberbaumbrücke

The Oberbaumbrücke is a double decked bridge that connects the districts of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, two districts that were previously divided between East and West, over the River Spree. I could see the bridge out the window of the boat that I was staying on. The light throughout the day changed the character of the bridge, and walking it was like going through history.

A wooden bridge was first built here in 1732. That bridge was replaced with the one pictured above in 1896 and was designed by Otto Stahn.

Friedenskirche in Sans Souci

Just inside the entrance to the park Sans Souci is a church. The Friedenskirche – The Church of Peace -  is the burial place of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV and his wife.

The construction of the church was begun in April of 1845 and wasn’t completed until 1854. The design of the church was based on the Santa Maria Clemente church in Rome and built in the Italian Monastic syle. The above photo was taken outside the church, in the courtyard arcade.

Posdam ice cream vendor

Eateries everywhere in Europe use these large three-dimensional signs to intice  hungry visitors to come into their stalls or up to their carts. This one was found outside of an ice cream cafe on Brandenburger Strasse in Potsdam.

Dutch shutters in Potsdam

Shutters on one of the Dutch houses in Potsdam. The same shutters are visible on the house across the street by the reflection in the windows. Unlike modern shutters that cover the whole window, these shutters cover the bottom half of the window for privacy, leaving the top open for light to come through.
